A successful and well-established startup in the identity space is hiring a Backend Team Lead to lead one of its core engineering teams.
The company develops a modular, API-first platform designed for high scale, low latency, and a strong developer experience. The role combines people leadership with deep technical involvement and is ideal for someone who wants to remain close to architecture and code while leading a strong backend team.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the day-to-day work of a backend engineering team, including technical direction, execution, and people development
• Stay actively involved in system design, coding, code reviews, debugging, and production challenges
• Own engineering priorities and manage the team’s backlog in line with product and business objectives
• Drive delivery across the full development cycle, from planning and architecture through deployment and production support
• Design and improve distributed backend systems that operate at high scale and low latency
• Lead the development of real-time data-processing and streaming capabilities using Apache technologies
• Establish clear standards for code quality, reliability, performance, scalability, and security
• Work closely with Product, Security, Data Science, and additional engineering teams
• Identify technical risks early and lead practical mitigation plans
• Support the professional growth of team members through coaching, feedback, and technical mentorship
• Improve engineering processes, deployment practices, observability, and operational ownership
• Make informed technical trade-offs while maintaining focus on delivery and long-term system health
Required Experience
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
• At least 2 years of experience leading or managing backend engineers
• Strong hands-on backend development experience
• Proven ability to lead a team while remaining actively involved in architecture and implementation
• Strong coding skills in Python; experience with Java, Scala, Go, or another backend language is also relevant
• Experience designing and operating distributed, high-throughput, production-grade systems
• Practical experience with technologies such as Apache Flink, Spark, Beam, or similar streaming and distributed-computing platforms
• Experience working with at least one major cloud platform: AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Strong understanding of microservices, APIs, system performance, and scalable architecture
• Experience managing technical priorities, delivery commitments, and cross-team dependencies
• Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced production environment
